Not enough Gospel, Jesus, or Bible in it.  Sep 6, 2007
The title is clever, and the topics are good choices, however, I wish someone else had written the book. There is little Christianity in it. Very little of Christ. The use of the Bible seems secondary, mostly as a support or augmentation to the many secular quotations that are the backbone of the study. When the Bible is used, it is not used with authoritative or transformative power but mostly as a source of anecdote.

Although it is a men's study, it is not very manly. As I have lead my men's Bible class through it, I am occasionally apologetic for the sissified perspectives which the book uses. For example, on page 89, "...you can't figure out where she finds the time to keep up with friends from so long ago. Meanwhile, you stumble over the names of men in your support group after missing a single week."

"support group"? It's hard enough getting men into a Bible class with out reaffirming their suspicions that Bible groups are for girls. Don't get me wrong, I realize that we want to give men a place where they can open up and be themselves, but this book tends to treat the reader as if he were a yuppie housewife who's run out of valium.

I'm reluctant to criticize a book that obviously is written with good intentions, but it is constructive to encourage writers to appreciate the power of the Bible as it addresses our daily challenges. . Most of my experience with material from NavPress has been positive, so this book was a surprise.
